Getting Around Newcastle
TRAINS
If you are coming by train, alight at Newcastle Station and make your way to the Info Booth at Festival Club for a program, maps, info and directions around the festival and town.
BIKES
Newcastle is flat and the venues are pretty close together so bring your bike along and you’ll have fun ringing around the streets with the kids in your new bike gang.
BUSES
Jump on Newcastle Buses (the blue and white State Transit ones only) between 7.30am and 6.00pm and travel FREE in the CBD. So if you are dragging your feet and it just seems too far, you could travel on the bus for one or two stops up and down Hunter St for free.
The Fare Free Zone is indicated by signs on the bus stops, but extends from Newcastle Station to just on the edge of Hamilton. So travel is covered from the beaches, up Darby St, right along Hunter St to the backpackers both in Hamilton and Newcastle East.
Accommodation
TENT CITY
This Is Not Art has set up a temporary Campground to provide festival goers with the cheapest accommodation option for the festival – $10 per person per night, open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The Campground is for those in tents, swags, vans and trucks, or those who want to sleep under the stars. Other budget accommodation options in Newcastle usually book out over the festival period, but you can guarantee yourself a place to sleep by booking into Tent City – there is room for up to 500 people.
Otherwise, Newcastle city has a range of good options for accommodation. To be reasonably close to the action, look for accommodation in the following city areas: Newcastle, Newcastle East, Newcastle West, Cooks Hill, Bar Beach, The Hill, Wickham. These are in walking distance or an easy bike ride.
Adamstown, Broadmeadow, Carrington, Hamilton, Islington, Mayfield, Merewether, The Junction, and Tighes Hill are good if you will have a bike or a car, and public buses service all these areas.
