Electrofringe welcomes you to its 14th festival of electronic arts and culture.

This year we’re offering you the same feast of all that is eclectic and experimental, in a program carefully curated for you to be able to experience all that is on offer. We’ve worked really hard to make the festival
accessible, so if you’ve ever thought you might like to learn how to make glitch art, or find out what the hell
these Arduinos things are and what to do with them, come to a workshop! If you’ve ever wondered how people get into the world of tinkering and hackery, strike up a conversation with one of our artists after their presentation. And if you’re curious about the fun and games of festival planning, when you see us around and about Newcastle, stop
us, say hi! (Or better still, buy us a beer at the Festival Club and we’ll tell you some stories. It’ll be a laugh.)

Thanks for coming. Now get into it and have fun.

5-6pm, Sun 2nd Oct
The electronic music duo Icarus (Ollie Bown and Sam Britton) have experimented with electronic music production and live performance for over a decade. In 2011, they have been working with a combination of generative and traditional music making techniques to produce a ‘parametric’ album that will be available as a digital download, so that anyone who buys the album will get a download that is different from those. The project was inspired by Icarus’ experiments with generative music techniques, the use of parametric design techniques in design and architecture, and the problems of uniqueness, value and distribution on the modern world of digital music commerce. The album was also made feasible by new tools and technologies that bring together the typical utility of a digital studio with the power and flexibility of algorithmic composition tools.

Ollie Bown will discuss the pleasures and perils of composing parametric music in the light of this venture.

1.30-4.30pm, Thur 29th Sep
The installation aims to technically reconstruct a traditional Chinese Guqin string instrument, to invite bodily interpretation of the classical instrument. Guqin has a special place in the Chinese history as a symbol of the high-culture of the nobles and intellectuals (Junzi, Superior Man). It’s also seen as the vessel for pursuing harmony. Guqin is sometimes referred to by the Chinese as “the father of Chinese music” or “the instrument of the sages”.

The installation allows the performer and audience to experience three dimensions of the culture: sound, movement and emotion. The setup consists of an interactive instrument with “strings” created by laser sensors network, designed to allow meaningful intervention of movements to trigger the sound. The performer will also wear bend and pressure sensors at different parts of the body to create layer of sound effects. The emotion of the performer will be sensed by an ECG heatbeat sensor, which in turn translates into the temperature actuation (heating and cooling) at the palm rest of the audience, so that they could feel the additional sensation of the performance.
